Once you’re back on board and headed for Mexico, kick back, look out for humpback whales in the azure waters, take a dance class, bask by the pool and explore dreamy ports of call. It was initially built in 2006, but in 2020 it was “amplified,” which means Royal Caribbean spent millions refurbishing the ship and adding new attractions. It has quite a few restaurants and fun activities like a climbing wall, Flow Rider, ice skating, and laser tag. One thing I didn’t like was that less than 50% of the dining options are included on Freedom of the Seas; the rest are all additional charge venues. Then again, for a short cruise, I don’t think that’d be a huge problem. Looking at the ports these ships were sailing to, I had a few options.
This also makes it much easier to get a group of family or friends together for a weekend sailing. It’s not uncommon to see bachelorette parties and family reunions take place on a weekend cruise. It can be tough to align work schedules and commitments during the week, but a weekend cruise is easier to schedule. As a cruiser living in Florida, this means I have the flexibility to take weekend cruises more often than the average person. Although it had been over a decade since my last Carnival cruise, I was intrigued when I found a cheap weekend cruise from Mobile, Alabama on Carnival Ecstasy. This is one ship that’s ready to put its fun where your vacation is, with plenty of ways to enjoy your time away.

Carnival Splendor sails the Southern Hemisphere around Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific on cruises that range from two to 10 days. The ship has Carnival’s only quick-service Indian restaurant and boasts a pool with a retractable roof, so you can swim without worrying about the weather. However, if you love cruising so much that you might have a hard time leaving a ship after just a few nights, you might want to skip the weekend sailing and save up for a weeklong cruise instead.
